For generations, The BASE Otero Community Youth Center has served as a cornerstone of
support, opportunity, and hope for the children and families of Otero County. What began as a local Boys Club initiative in the late 1960s eventually evolved into the Boys & Girls Club of
Otero County, providing a safe and welcoming environment where young people could learn, grow, build friendships, and discover their potential. Over the decades, the organization became a trusted community resource, offering quality youth development programs, educational support, recreation, character-building activities, and mentorship opportunities for thousands of children throughout Otero County.

As the organization grew, community leaders, volunteers, donors, and supporters worked
together to establish a permanent home where youth could gather in a safe and nurturing
environment. The DeLeon family played a very significant role in the establishment of the new building, for which the organization is eternally grateful. The facility at 201 Dale Scott Avenue in Alamogordo, New Mexico became the heart of the organization's operations and remains a vibrant hub for youth programming today. Countless community members, civic leaders, businesses, volunteers, and families have contributed to the success and sustainability of the organization throughout its history, ensuring that local children always had a place to belong.

For many years, the organization operated as an affiliate of Boys & Girls Clubs of America,
benefiting from the recognition and resources associated with the national movement while continuing to serve the unique needs of children and families in Otero County. During this time, the organization developed a strong reputation for providing before-school and after-school programming, summer enrichment opportunities, educational support, leadership development, and positive youth engagement.

In late 2025, after careful consideration and thoughtful planning, the Board of Directors made the decision to transition away from the national Boys & Girls Clubs affiliation and establish an independent identity rooted entirely in the needs and priorities of Otero County. This important step reflected a commitment to local decision-making, community-driven solutions, and organizational autonomy.

As a result, the organization adopted a new name: The BASE Otero, which operates as a
Community Youth Center.

​

The name "BASE" was intentionally selected because it represents far more than a physical
location. A base is a foundation. It is a place of safety, security, belonging, and support. It is
where growth begins, confidence is built, and individuals are equipped to move forward
successfully. For the youth and families of Otero County, The BASE Otero serves as a launching point for learning, achievement, leadership, and lifelong success.

The letters in BASE also reflect the organization's mission and core values:

These values guide every program, activity, and interaction within the organization and reinforce its mission of empowering youth to reach their full potential.

The transition to The BASE Otero was not a departure from the organization's history, but rather an evolution of its longstanding commitment to local youth. The organization remains deeply connected to the legacy of service built over decades while embracing the freedom to create programs, partnerships, and opportunities tailored specifically to the needs of Otero County families.

The decision to become independent was driven by a belief that the people who know the
community best are the people who live and work here. The organization believes that the most effective solutions for local children and families are developed locally, informed by firsthand knowledge of the challenges, opportunities, and strengths that make Otero County unique. Independence allows The BASE Otero to remain flexible, responsive, innovative, and accountable to the community it serves.

In May 2026, the organization entered a new chapter of leadership with the appointment of
Angel Chapman-McDavid, JD, as Chief Executive Officer. Under her leadership, The BASE
Otero continues to build upon its strong foundation while pursuing a bold vision for the future. With an emphasis on youth empowerment, community engagement, educational enrichment, and organizational sustainability, the organization remains committed to serving children and families throughout Alamogordo, Tularosa, and the greater Otero County region.

Today, The BASE Otero Community Youth Center stands as a locally governed, community-
focused organization dedicated to providing safe, fun, educational, and impactful programming for school-aged youth. Through before-school programs, after-school care, summer enrichment, field trips, leadership opportunities, and family engagement initiatives, The BASE Otero continues its legacy of helping young people build confidence, discover their talents, and achieve their dreams.

While the organization's name has changed over time, its purpose has remained constant: to invest in the children of Otero County, strengthen families, and help create a brighter future for generations to come.
